From a distance, Musa ka Musalla looks like a gentle green giant. Almost friendly. Like a mountain that would help you carry your groceries.

Do not be fooled. This one makes you earn every meter.

A Shepherd's Prayer Mat

The name means 'Musa's prayer mat'. Local tradition says a shepherd named Musa used to climb to the summit to pray, and a small shrine on top is believed to mark his place. Locals still speak of him with respect.

Standing up there, it is easy to understand why someone would choose this spot. The ground falls away on every side, ridges roll toward the Kaghan and Siran valleys, and the silence is so complete you can hear your own heartbeat. It feels less like a summit and more like a doorway.

Which Way Up?

Several routes lead to the top. The most popular starts from Shinkiari in the Siran Valley side and climbs via Munda Gucha, with pastures and summer settlements along the way. Another approach starts from the Balakot side, with jeep access to a higher trailhead and a long, steep day of more than 1,500 m of ascent.

Whichever route you choose, expect forest, then open ridgeline, then a final push where the trees disappear and the world opens up.

Gujjar Shepherds and Summer Pastures

In summer, Gujjar herding families move their animals up to the high pastures around the mountain. Their stone and timber huts dot the slopes, and trekkers are often offered lassi or tea as they pass. It is hospitality without fuss, from people whose whole lives move with the seasons.

Be a good guest in return: stay on paths through pastures, close gates and carry out every scrap of litter.

Plan Your Trip
