Not every mountain adventure needs ten days, three porters and a backpack heavier than your younger sibling.
Sometimes all you need is a weekend, decent shoes and the willingness to walk uphill for a few hours.
A Summit in the Pir Panjal
Ganga Choti rises to 3,045 m above Sudhan Gali in Bagh District, Azad Kashmir. It belongs to the Pir Panjal Range, part of the Lower Himalaya, and before 1947 it sat on the boundary between old districts of Kashmir and Jammu.
Locals say the name dates back to the Hindu communities who lived in the area before Partition. Choti simply means peak. Either way, the view from the top needs no translation.
The Walk Up
From Sudhan Gali, the trail climbs roughly 8 km through pine forest and then onto open grassy ridges. Most people take 3 to 5 hours to the top, depending on fitness and where the jeep drops them.
The final ridge is where the magic happens: on clear days, layer after layer of blue mountains fade into the horizon. You stand there, slightly out of breath, and feel very small and very lucky at the same time.
Snow, Skiing and Village Life
In winter the mountain turns white, and local sports associations have even held snow events here. Summer brings flowers, grazing cattle and village families selling corn bread with butter and chai to tired hikers.
Bagh's villages are known for their hospitality. Do not be surprised if you are invited for tea just for walking past.
